The industry’s top pet fashion and accessory designers got their glam on in New York City last weekend for Pet Fashion Week. The third annual event featured 160 petastic exhibitors with the hottest new lines in pet apparel, leashes, dinnerware, food and bath products. There was a dazzling runway show with 25 canine models, half of which were former shelter dogs. Tryouts were held to find those comfortable with lights and loud music – and of course, applause.

While the puparazzi swarmed, the print media picked up the hottest fall trends for urban dogs and they’re all about products that are eco-friendly. That means t-shirts made from organic cotton, spa products with organic and hypoallergenic ingredients, and everything in between. What else? Fashion-minded mutts will be wearing cool t-shirts to express themselves as well as form-fitting breed-specific pieces. We all know to dress for your body type – and now so will the yorkies and frenchies. And there are new looks for big dogs – the hot styles are functional and comfortable, like J.Crew-inspired basics.

In an effort to foster design and innovation in the pet industry, Pet Fashion Week is also a designer platform. Eight designers were chosen from a pool of 35 to compete in a pet dinnerware design contest and 18 aspiring designers created dog accessories with the theme “Dog in the City.” It was every fashion dog’s week in the big city, but poodles really cleaned up. With the world’s top groomers competing in the “Les Poochs Poodle” competition for the freshest cuts in poodle dos, there wasn’t a fur out of place.

Over 2,000 pet retailers walked the show to stock up their shops for fall. With the most innovative and luxurious pet products in the industry ready for pet boutiques everywhere, city dog style is coming to pup near you.
